Most tracking is accomplished manually. Datalogging receivers are usually left in the field unattended for weeks or months at a time.
Most studies don't need coded equipment. Only very large fish studies involving thousands of tags, or terrestrial work where there is a shortage of available frequencies, use coded receivers.
